Terry Dowling (born 21 March 1947 in Sydney) is an Australian writer, critic and editor working primarily in speculative fiction, though he describes his broader ambition as being an "imagier" unconstrained by genre. He holds an MA in English literature from the University of Sydney and a PhD in creative writing from the University of Western Australia. He is best known for the Tom Rynosseros cycle — Rynosseros, Blue Tyson, Twilight Beach and Rynemonn — a linked-story sequence set in a far-future, Aboriginal-inflected Australia, and for horror collections including Basic Black: Tales of Appropriate Fear and Clowns at Midnight. Dowling is a repeat Ditmar Award and Aurealis Award winner for his short fiction and collections, received the International Horror Guild Award for Basic Black, and has been shortlisted for the World Fantasy Award.
