Tọlá Okogwu

Tọlá Okogwu is a British-Nigerian author, journalist, and hair-care educator who relocated from Nigeria to the United Kingdom. Her debut novel, Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun, follows a British-Nigerian girl who discovers her natural hair grants her extraordinary psychic powers, drawing on Okogwu's own wish to reframe natural hair as a source of strength rather than a flaw for Black and African girls. The book launched the Onyeka series, continued in Onyeka and the Rise of the Rebels and Onyeka and the Heroes of the Dawn. Okogwu has cited the Marvel universe and science-fiction films watched with her parents as early creative influences, and her work blends contemporary British-Nigerian life with superhero-inflected adventure for young readers.
