Vaishnavi Patel is an American novelist and attorney who grew up in Chicago and graduated from Yale Law School, passing the bar in 2022 and working as a law clerk in Houston while focusing on constitutional law and civil rights. She writes retellings of Hindu epics and mythology, beginning with her debut novel, Kaikeyi (2022), which reimagines a queen from the Ramayana, reached number fourteen on the New York Times bestseller list, and was a finalist for Goodreads Choice Awards in fantasy and debut fiction and for a 2023 Ignyte Award. Her second novel, Goddess of the River (2024), retells the story of the goddess Ganga and received a 2025 Audie Award nomination, while Ten Incarnations of Rebellion (2025), an alternate history in which 1960s India remains under British rule, won the 2025 Sidewise Award for Alternate History.
