William Butler was an American novelist, born in 1929 in Portland, Oregon. He is known for The Butterfly Revolution (1961), a novel about a summer camp descending into an increasingly totalitarian boys' uprising, often read alongside Lord of the Flies as a mid-century parable of order and coercion among children. He followed it with The House at Akiya (1963) and Mr Three (1964). Butler was later associated with Bennington College, where he was counted among the school's notable literary alumni. His small body of fiction has remained best known for its single, unsettling premise: children building a miniature authoritarian state out of camp routine and peer pressure.
