These Jude Deveraux romances are linked less by one continuing plot than by recurring family surnames — Montgomery and Taggert — that Deveraux threads through much of her historical and contemporary romance writing. A Knight in Shining Armor, her best-known novel, is a standalone time-travel romance whose heroine, Dougless Montgomery, falls for a sixteenth-century English lord pulled forward into her present; The Maiden instead belongs to her more tightly connected medieval Montgomery-brothers sequence. Readers should expect a loose family of stories connected by name and world rather than one continuous saga.

Major Helen Prescott had always played by the rules. That was why Rafe Santiago had nicknamed her "Prissy" at the military academy years before. Rafe's teasing had made her life miserable back then, and, with his irresistible good looks, he was the man responsible for her one momentary lapse of self-control. So when a stint in the National Guard brought him under her command, Helen laid down the law -- she would stand for no macho moves or bedroom looks in HER platoon. But then a routine sky dive went awry, and all bets were off as they parachuted straight into the 1850 California Gold Rush. Mistaken for a notorious bandit and his infamously sensuous mistress, they found themselves on the wrong side of the law. In a time and place where rules had no meaning, Helen found Rafe's hard, bronzed body strangely comforting, and his piercing blue eyes left her all too willing to share his bedroll. Suddenly, his teasing remarks made her feel all woman, and she was ready to throw caution to the wind if she could spend every night in the arms of her very own... Desperado.

Joe Haldeman's The Forever War (1974) follows a soldier conscripted into a centuries-long interstellar war against the alien Taurans, using relativistic space travel so that months spent in transit correspond to years or decades passing back on Earth. Haldeman later returned to the same conflict in Forever Peace (1997), a thematically connected but separate story, and Forever Free (1999), a direct sequel set years after the original war's end. The first novel won the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus awards and is considered a foundational work of military science fiction.
