This tie-in book line novelized and extended the gothic soap opera Dark Shadows while the TV series was still airing, all credited to 'Marilyn Ross,' a house pseudonym for Dan Ross. The books increasingly centered on the reluctant vampire Barnabas Collins, recasting him in more heroic terms as the show itself softened him from villain to tragic hero, and often told independent stories set in different time periods than the broadcast episodes. Thirty-two novels appeared between December 1966 and March 1972, alongside a novelization of the 1970 feature film House of Dark Shadows.
