Divergent Fates
Matthew S. Cox, Mark W. Woodring, Benjamin Sperduto, James Wymore, J. P. Sloan, J. S. Hughes, Patrick Burdine, Robert J Defendi & Wilbert Stanton · 6 series · 20 novels · 2 novellas · 4 novelettes · 5 short stories · 1 anthology · 2014–2021
The rain in West City tastes of coolant and old money, and somewhere under the arcology's neon the dead are still talking — you just need the right kind of mind to hear them. Divergent Fates is a shared cyberpunk future cut from bleak cloth: a far-future Earth run by megacorporations, walled between the gleaming vertical cities and the poisoned Badlands beyond, where a generation of humans has begun waking with psionic gifts nobody asked for and every power wants to own. Matthew S. Cox built the world and writes most of it, with Mark W. Woodring alongside; the shelf spans several standalone series threaded through one long timeline. Division Zero rides with Kirsten Wren, a psychic homicide detective in the police unit that handles the crimes ordinary cops can't — the ghosts, the mind-killers, the things that leave no body. The Awakened follows a young woman coming into her power the hard way. Prophet of the Badlands walks the wasteland beside a child healer everyone would sooner cage than free. Virtual Immortality plugs into noir where a mind can outlive its body, and Daughter of Mars trades the wet streets for the military edge of the same rotting order. The register stays street-level and grim — procedural grit, impossible choices, the small human warmth that survives in the cracks of a bought-and-sold world — closer to a rain-slick precinct drama than a starship's bridge. Nothing here demands a fixed order; each series stands on its own feet and the world shows itself sideways, one corner at a time. Most readers step in through Division Zero, where the psionics, the corporate rot, and the underbelly of the city all lay their cards down at once.
