Jurassic Park Universe
David Lewman, Michael Crichton & Gail Herman · 1 series · 2 novels · 3 novellas · 1 short story · 1990–2022
A biotech company buys an island, a supply of amber, and the consulting services of a mathematician who tells them at length, and correctly, that they have built a system nobody can control. Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park is a thriller assembled out of technical documents — velocity graphs, gene sequences, an inventory count that keeps coming out right for the wrong reason — and its dinosaurs are frightening in exact proportion to how carefully the paperwork was done. Crichton wrote two: Jurassic Park in 1990, and The Lost World five years later, sending Ian Malcolm back to a second island for reasons the first book had gone out of its way to rule out. Around them sit the junior novelisations of the later films — The Lost World, Jurassic World, Fallen Kingdom, Dominion — carrying the premise into a franchise the novels never contemplated. The pull is competence horror: capable people, a well-funded plan, and the slow professional recognition that the failure was designed in from the start. Read Jurassic Park first — it is bleaker, more technical and considerably more violent than the film — then The Lost World if you want more of Malcolm being right at people. The novelisations are for younger readers who came in through the screen.
