Lord John Grey is an 18th-century British Army officer who has to navigate military duty, aristocratic intrigue, and criminal investigations while hiding a secret that could destroy him: he is gay, at a time when discovery meant ruin or worse. Diana Gabaldon spun this series of historical mystery novels and novellas off from her Outlander books, following Grey through cases set mostly between 1756 and 1761 that draw on real events of the Seven Years' War. The stories work as self-contained mysteries even for readers who haven't read Outlander.
