Maradaine
Marshall Ryan Maresca · 5 series · 15 novels · 2 novellas · 2 novelettes · 2015–2024
The tramlines of Maradaine run through everything — past the University spires, down the gaslit alleys of Dentonhill, across the cold marble of Parliament. This is the capital of Druthal, a nation of guilds and mage circles and chivalric orders, and Marshall Ryan Maresca builds it as one city told four ways: a single sprawling metropolis that holds four separate adventures, each forever crossing the others' paths. Every series is its own genre. The Maradaine books follow Veranix Calbert, a magic student by day who hunts a drug lord by masked night as the Thorn. The Streets of Maradaine turns to the Rynax brothers and their heist crew, rebuilding a livelihood after fire takes it. Maradaine Constabulary rides with Inspectors Satrine Rainey and Minox Welling through a stubborn police procedural, and the Maradaine Elite trails Dayne Heldrin, a candidate protector of the Tarian Order, into the knife-work of city politics. Roughly nineteen books share one map: the neighborhoods overlap, the timelines lock into step, and figures from one story pass through the edges of another until the separate threads pull toward a shared reckoning. The register is street-level and swashbuckling — fast fights, cross-class friction, magic treated as craft and menace rather than wonder, a city rendered block by hard-worn block. Any of the four opening novels is a clean front door: The Thorn of Dentonhill for masked-vigilante momentum, or A Murder of Mages for the slow-burn procedural. Maresca has laid out an interleaved order for readers who want the whole city at once, but publication order serves the newcomer just as well.
