Patricia Wrightson's The Nargun and the Stars follows a boy sent to recover on his relatives' rural Australian property, where he becomes entangled with the Nargun, an ancient stone-being drawn from Aboriginal storytelling traditions, alongside other spirits native to the land. The novel treats the Australian bush as inhabited by beings far older than European settlement, seen through a child's slowly widening awareness.
