Ranger's Apprentice
John Flanagan · 5 series · 28 novels · 3 novellas · 6 novelettes · 4 short stories · 1 collection · 2004–2024
A Ranger is not a wizard, whatever the villagers whisper. He is only a man in a mottled cloak who can put an arrow through a coin at fifty paces, vanish against a hedgerow, and read three days of a stranger's passage in the mud of a road. In the kingdom of Araluen, fifty such men keep the peace no army could — and the story begins when Will, a small orphan passed over on Choosing Day, is taken as apprentice by the grim, dryly funny Ranger Halt. What follows is an education in patience, in the longbow, and in doing the hard quiet thing while the knights get the songs. John Flanagan built this world alone, and it holds together like good saddle-work. The core cycle runs a dozen books, from Will's apprenticeship through wars with the Norse-blooded Skandians, invasions, and a long march east to Nihon-Ja. Around it turn three companion sequences: the Brotherband Chronicles, following young Hal and his ragtag ship's crew across the same seas; The Early Years, a prequel duology on how Halt and Crowley remade the shattered Ranger Corps; and The Royal Ranger, which passes the cloak to a new apprentice, the princess Maddie. The pleasure here is competence and friendship — Will, the warrior Horace, the courier Alyss, coffee brewed on a cold camp, banter dry as autumn leaves, heroism that never shouts. Newcomers start at the beginning, with The Ruins of Gorlan; the books reward reading in the order they were written.

1 work not in this orderThe main Ranger's Apprentice cycle comes first in series order, through The Lost Stories. The Brotherband Chronicles follow, set among the Skandians in the same era, and then The Royal Ranger books pick the story up a generation later. The two Early Years prequels about Halt are saved for last, when their backstory means the most.
