Sand
Hugh Howey & Daniel Arthur Smith · 2 series · 1 novel · 5 novellas · 1 novelette · 1 collection · 2013–2022
The wind never stops, and neither does the sand. It climbs the rooftops of Springston, swallows the old world one dune at a time, and buries a continent where the United States used to be. Beneath it lie the ruins of everything that came before — and the divers desperate enough to go down after it. Hugh Howey's Sand is set in a scoured near-future desert where salvage means strapping on a suit and sinking through solid ground as though it were water. At its heart is a single novel, first released in five serialized parts and later gathered whole, following the Axelrod family across the hard divide between Springston and Low-Pub as they chase rumors of Danvar — a fabled city buried deep enough to hold the riches of the drowned old age. Around that spine sits the Sand Saga, a small shared-world shelf opened under Amazon's Kindle Worlds, where other hands (Daniel Arthur Smith among them) wrote further stories in Howey's dust. Where his Silo books go underground into sealed bunkers, Sand trades claustrophobia for open sky and open grief: lean, grit-under-the-nails storytelling about family, poverty, and a past that will not stay buried. Begin with the novel itself, complete in one volume; the shared-world tales are for lingering in the dunes afterward.
