Unroll the map and the borders keep going. Silvery Earth is a single fantasy world wide enough to hold warrior queens and hired blades, elemental immortals and the ordinary folk caught in their weather — a secondary world of swords and low, patient magic that one writer has spent years filling in kingdom by kingdom, century by century. The chronicle sorts itself by ground and by age. The Southern Kingdoms and Northern Kingdoms carry the mortal quarrels; the Varian Empire rises and frets over its succession; Amazons' Country keeps its own laws and its own women-at-arms. Threaded through them are standing things — the Assassins' Guild, whose contracts cross every border, and the Books of the Immortals, where deathless beings bound to the elements walk among people who will not outlast them. Quests gathers the shorter roads, single tales for a single sitting. All of it is Barbara G. Tarn's, one hand working in novellas and novels, so the world stays of a piece even as it sprawls across many series. What sets it apart is how little ceremony it asks. Women carry blades, love runs in every direction, and none of it stops for a speech — the telling moves at the brisk clip of older sword-and-sorcery, adventure first, grand doom kept at the door. Because it is a chronicle rather than one long march, there is no fixed first step: choose the region that pulls at you, or take the Assassins' Guild or Amazons' Country for a self-contained taste, and let the rest of the map find you.
