Sword of Truth
Terry Goodkind · 5 series · 23 novels · 4 novellas · 1994–2020
Truth is a blade, and it cuts the hand that grips it carelessly. A woods guide named Richard Cypher meets a woman fleeing across a boundary no one is meant to cross, and by an old wizard's choosing he becomes the Seeker — bearer of a named sword forged to serve whoever claims it and answer for how they use it. So opens the Sword of Truth: a high fantasy of walled kingdoms, where the free Westland, the quarreling Midlands, and the empire of D'Hara are severed by failing magical boundaries, wizards have grown rare, and tyranny learns to wear the face of virtue. Eleven volumes carry the central saga, from Wizard's First Rule to Confessor, each named for and turning on a hard maxim — a "Wizard's Rule" about the ways people deceive themselves and are deceived. From there Terry Goodkind, the single author of it all, keeps building: the four-book Richard and Kahlan sequence (The Omen Machine through Warheart), the shorter Children of D'Hara serial, the Nicci Chronicles following a hardened sorceress into stranger lands, and the prequel The First Confessor. It sprawls, but it is one continuous vision, not a shared world. What sets it apart is that it argues. This is fantasy that openly believes reason and the single unbowed life outweigh any mob or creed, and it stages that conviction as open war against the collectivist Imperial Order — adventure, romance, torment, and moral certainty carried at full conviction. Newcomers should begin at Wizard's First Rule, which stands complete on its own, and continue in publication order; the Rules are meant to accumulate, each one earned by the book before it.
