Tencendor

Sara Douglass · 5 series · 11 novels · 6 short stories · 1995–2011

A land divided against itself, and a Prophecy old enough to have outlived the tongue that first spoke it. Tencendor is the world Sara Douglass raised across nine novels — a realm the pious once called Achar, where the Seneschal preaches the Plough-God Artor and names as Forbidden the winged Icarii, who read fate in the Star Dance, and the forest-walking Avar, who keep faith with the trees. Then the ice moves south, a warleader learns whose son he truly is, and the sundered peoples are summoned to become one country again. The saga runs in three movements, all Douglass's own. It opens with the Axis Trilogy — BattleAxe, Enchanter, StarMan (1995-96) — the rise of the StarMan foretold by the Prophecy of the Destroyer. It continues in The Wayfarer Redemption — Sinner, Pilgrim, Crusader (1997-99), as the next generation inherits both the throne and its curses. And it returns generations later, the map wider and the shadows longer, in the Darkglass Mountain trilogy — The Serpent Bride, The Twisted Citadel, The Infinity Gate (2007-10), reaching out to the kingdom of Escator and lands the earliest songs never named. Douglass writes with a zealot's intensity: faith set against faith, love that ruins as often as it redeems, gods who are neither kind nor absent. Where lesser epics keep their factions tidy, hers bleed into one another until you cannot tell salvation from conquest. Read her in the order she wrote her — begin with BattleAxe and let the Prophecy carry you. The reward is a world that keeps turning long after the first Destroyer has fallen.
