Brian Aldiss's Horatio Stubbs trilogy - The Hand-Reared Boy, A Soldier Erect, and A Rude Awakening - traces one man's coming of age from adolescence through the Second World War, drawing on Aldiss's own wartime service with the Royal Signals in Burma for the later two books. The three novels, spanning 1970 to 1978, were collected as the omnibus The Horatio Stubbs Saga in 1985.
