L. Frank Baum's Trot and Cap'n Bill duology (The Sea Fairies, 1911; Sky Island, 1912) follows Californian girl Trot and her one-legged sailor companion Cap'n Bill through undersea fairy kingdoms and then to a fantastical island divided between light and dark peoples. Baum conceived it as a rival series to his own Oz books, but both characters were eventually folded into Oz continuity and reappear as regulars in later Oz novels.
