Twilight Universe

Stephenie Meyer · 1 series · 6 novels · 1 novella · 2005–2020

Forks, Washington gets about three hours of sun a month, which is precisely why the Cullens live there. Bella Swan moves in with her father, sits down next to a boy in biology who looks at her as though she has done something unforgivable, and works out over one very slow autumn that he is cold, immovable, a hundred and four years old, and expending considerable effort on not killing her. Down the road on the reservation, the Quileute boys are getting inconveniently large. Stephenie Meyer's four novels — Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn — run the romance to its end. The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner fills in the newborn army from the third book, Midnight Sun retells the first from Edward's side, and Life and Death swaps every character's gender to settle an argument about the story. The register is high-intensity teenage feeling played entirely straight: longing, danger, the appalling seriousness of being seventeen, and a world where being chosen is both the fantasy and the trap. Read the four in order beginning with Twilight. Midnight Sun is best afterwards, once you already know what Edward was not saying, and Bree Tanner is the short, bleak counterweight to all of it.
