Vampire for Hire follows Samantha Moon, a suburban Southern California private investigator and single mother who is turned into a vampire while working a case and has to keep her condition hidden from her children while continuing to solve cases and navigate a hidden supernatural community. J. R. Rain launched the series with Moon Dance and wrote most of its run himself; since his death it has continued under co-authors including Matthew S. Cox, Rod Kierkegaard Jr., and Kris Carey.
