Dark Universe (Donna Grant)

Donna Grant · 10 series · 68 novels · 18 novellas · 3 short stories · 2 collections · 1 anthology · 2009–2026

Beneath the heather and the ruined castles of the Highlands, older things are stirring. Primeval gods sleep inside mortal men. Immortal dragons wear the shape of Scottish lairds and pour whisky at a distillery called Dreagan while the world forgets they were ever real. This is the Dark World, where every love story is also a war — between Druid and drough, Light Fae and Dark, the last of an ancient magic and the enemies who would drain it. The world unfolds across nine intertwined series, each a chain of standalone romances that share a mythology, a map, and a slow-building saga. It opens in the sixteenth century with the Dark Sword and Dark Warriors books — cursed Highland immortals with gods bound in their blood, and the Druids who might save or damn them. It swells into its flagship, Dark Kings, and its Reaper and Dragon Kings offshoots: the Dragon Kings, shape-shifting warriors who sent their dragons away eons ago and now guard the secret in the modern Highlands against the Dark Fae. Skye Druids, Elven Kingdoms, and the Bastard Duology widen the borders further. The single hand behind all of it is Donna Grant, and roughly a hundred volumes deep, the sprawl is real — but the connective tissue is deliberate. Expect brooding warriors, blood magic, fated desire, and a guaranteed happy ending in every book, wrapped in Celtic myth and Scottish weather. The threads cross constantly; couples from one series turn up as allies in the next, so the pleasure compounds the deeper you go. Newcomers have two honest doors. For the full chronology, begin at the beginning: Dark Sword's Dangerous Highlander, where the MacLeod brothers first wake their bound gods. To start where the world is busiest, open Dark Kings with Darkest Flame and meet the Dragon Kings of Dreagan. Grant maintains an official reading order on her site for the committed.

The Reapers cross paths with the later Dark Kings books; they are kept as one block here, but can also be slotted between the Dark Kings by release date. Ignite the Magic, a prequel to the whole world, closes the list.
