A seventeen year old girl unexpectedly awakens from cryogenic hibernation on a generation ship on a 300 year flight en route to Alpha Centauri, where the crew have formed a docile society under the control of a single hereditary leader, and becomes involved with the leader's teenage designated successor. As the story alternates point of view between the two teens, the mystery of who is awakening and killing the hibernating colonists leads them to an even greater mystery.
