The villain Bane plots to weaken Batman before confronting and crippling the Dark Knight. The mantle of the Bat is passed to a young, unstable man who becomes increasingly violent in his crusade to cleanse Gotham City of crime. Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne is on a quest to recover his health and his role as Batman.
