Kate Neuman, a world-renowned hematologist working for the CDC, takes a trip to Romania to help treat some rare blood diseases. While there, she treats an extremely unusual infant found in an orphanage that requires blood transfusions in order to survive. The child becomes the key to a cure for cancer as well as AIDS, but her research is hindered by a certain group of Transylvanians who also have great interest in the child. Mike O'Rourke, one of the children in Summer of Night, plays a major adult role in this book.
