The TARDIS lands in Palestine during the Third Crusade, dropping the Doctor and his companions into the middle of a war between Richard the Lionheart and Saladin's forces. Barbara is captured by a Saracen raiding party and, in a case of mistaken identity, presented to Saladin's brother as an English princess, while the Doctor and the others try to reach King Richard and broker her release through a proposed political marriage that immediately runs into trouble when the bride-to-be refuses to cooperate. David Whitaker's novelization, one of the earliest Doctor Who books, expands his own teleplay for the William Hartnell serial The Crusade.
