Young Kivrin really, really wants to travel back to 1320 and doesn't listen to advice. James reluctantly has trained her for the trip but remains nervous. After she is sent back, one of the technicians in modern times falls very ill, as does Kivrin. Neither case can be the plague. Impossible.
