In the fading Winterlands, the witch Jenny Waynest and the aging dragon-slayer John Aversin are asked by a young courtier, Gareth, to ride south and kill a dragon terrorizing the capital, in exchange for help against the raiders harrying their own borders. Once there, they learn Gareth is the crown prince, acting against his father's wishes, and that the dragon Morkeleb the Black is only one thread in a web that includes a sorceress with a grip on the king.
