A dying millionaire wants proof, once and for all, of what happens after death, and hires physicist-turned-parapsychologist Dr. Lionel Barrett to spend a week investigating the Belasco House in Maine -- a mansion so thoroughly associated with atrocity that it's known simply as Hell House, where every previous investigation has ended in death or madness. Barrett brings his wife Edith along with two mediums, the spiritualist Florence Tanner and Benjamin Franklin Fischer, survivor of an earlier disastrous visit, whose scientific skepticism and spiritualist convictions clash from the first night inside. Richard Matheson's haunted-house novel, later filmed as The Legend of Hell House.
