After the global economic apocalypse that followed running out of petroleum, the US, like most nations, has recovered as a system wherein a small elite lives luxuriously while most people live lives of hard labor, poverty, and submission, while concepts such as democracy and liberty are viewed as obsolete theories, if they are remembered at all. One of the elite stumbles onto the knowledge that news and opinions are being carefully managed to whitewash the situation, which leads him to throw his lot in with those who oppose it.
