Taran and Gurgi return to Caer Dallben expecting rest, but the reunion is cut short when Fflewddur Fflam arrives bearing a grievously wounded Prince Gwydion and news that the magical sword Dyrnwyn has been lost. Hen Wen the oracular pig manages one last garbled prophecy before falling silent, and the companions split up to rally what help remains against the Death-Lord Arawn — one party bound for King Smoit's court, which they find has already fallen into enemy hands. The final volume of The Chronicles of Prydain gathers Taran, Eilonwy, Fflewddur and the rest for the war Arawn has been building toward since the series began.
