American diplomat Robert Thorn is in Rome when his newborn son dies within hours of birth, a loss he keeps from his wife Katherine by quietly agreeing, at a hospital chaplain's urging, to adopt another infant born that same night to a mother who also died. Thorn and Katherine raise the boy, whom they name Damien, without ever telling him, or, for years, each other, the truth about where he came from. As Damien grows, a string of increasingly disturbing incidents begins to trail him, though for a long while everyone around Thorn insists on ordinary explanations. David Seltzer's novelization of his own screenplay, released just ahead of the film.
