While Thorbardin's dwarves wall themselves off from the world, their Neidar kin outside are enslaved by a corrupt human empire that has moved into the lands the dwarves abandoned. A young Hylar dwarf named Derkin, aided by an elven wizard, leads the uprising that frees the captive Neidar and begins reclaiming lost dwarven territory, the campaign that earns him the throne-name King of Living Stone, borne by every dwarven king who follows him.
