B. Catling -- Brian Catling -- was a British artist and writer, born on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent, in 1948 and educated at the Royal College of Art. He spent decades as a sculptor, poet, and performance artist, holding a professorship in fine art at Oxford's Ruskin School and working across installation, film, and live performance as a Royal Academician. Relatively late in his career he turned to prose fiction, publishing his debut novel, Bobby Awl, in 2007, before finding wider recognition with The Vorrh trilogy (2012-2018), a densely imagined, surrealist fantasy set around a sentient forest on the edge of a colonial-era African city, following a cyclops and a party of hunters through its myths and horrors. He died in 2022.
