Charles de Lint (born 1951) is a Canadian writer regarded as one of the pioneers of urban fantasy, blending contemporary settings with Celtic, Native American, and other folklore. Born in the Netherlands, he moved to Canada as an infant and has lived in Ottawa since childhood; alongside writing he performs as a folk and Celtic musician. His major work is the Newford sequence, dozens of interconnected novels and story collections - including Dreams Underfoot, The Onion Girl, Widdershins, and Forests of the Heart - set in a fictional city where myth and magic intrude on ordinary lives. His earlier novel Moonheart (1984) helped define the genre. De Lint has also written poetry and criticism. He has won the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement, a further World Fantasy Award for Best Collection for Moonlight and Vines, and multiple Aurora and Sunburst Awards.
