Arcane Ascension
Andrew Rowe · 4 series · 14 novels · 2015–2025
Climb the Spire, and if you live to reach its summit a goddess sets her mark upon you: an attunement, the seed of every spell you will ever cast. In Kydera, magic is not a gift whispered to the chosen few. It is a discipline, examined and graded, its mana measured, its faulty runes traced and debugged like machinery. This is a world that rewards the student who reads the footnotes. Andrew Rowe raises that world across four interlocking cycles, all from one hand. Arcane Ascension, beginning with Sufficiently Advanced Magic, sends the anxious, brilliant Corin Cadence into a combat academy and the monster-warded tower that swallowed his brother, and it remains the load-bearing pillar. Weapons and Wielders follows the wandering swordsman Keras Selyrian, whose sacred blades and duels reach back into that academy's shadows, where he lingers as one of its stranger teachers. The War of Broken Mirrors, Rowe's earliest and knottiest work, pits a sword-god's would-be incarnation and a scholar-sorceress against imperial theology, while The Lost Edge pushes the map outward again. Characters, gods, and cosmology bleed freely across the borders. What sets it apart is honesty of mechanism. The magic obeys rules you can actually learn, exploit, and break, and half the pleasure lies in watching a clever, over-prepared protagonist reverse-engineer a lethal problem the way you would pick a locked door: progression fantasy with the workings shown, warm and often dryly funny beneath the rigor. Newcomers should begin with Sufficiently Advanced Magic. The author's own reading order threads Keras's adventures in afterward, and saves The War of Broken Mirrors for readers who want the foundations beneath the foundations.
