Allen Steele's Coyote sequence follows refugees who hijack the starship Alabama to escape a totalitarian near-future United States, only to arrive decades later - after a mutiny strands the ship's original crew in cryosleep - at Coyote, a habitable moon of a gas giant in the 47 Ursae Majoris system. Built from linked novellas and stories such as "Stealing Alabama" and "Coyote Rising," the books trace the colony from its illicit founding through an eventual war of independence against the government that pursued it. Later volumes widen into interstellar politics as Coyote's existence becomes known back on Earth.
