H. Rider Haggard's Eric Brighteyes is a Viking-age saga set in 10th-century Iceland, following the golden-eyed warrior Eric Thorgrimursson's doomed love for Gudruda against a backdrop of clan rivalry, sorcery, and blood feud after the sorceress Swanhild and the chieftain Ospakar both move against the match. Written in 1891 in the style of the Old Norse sagas Haggard admired, it stood alone for nearly a century until Mildred Downey Broxon, writing under a Norse pen name, continued the story in the 1979 sequel Eric Brighteyes #2: A Witch's Welcome.
