The pizzeria closes at nine, but the animatronics never really power down. Five Nights at Freddy's is the horror mythos grown out of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza — a birthday-party palace of singing bears, rabbits, and chickens where the smiling mascots on stage are stuffed with something that used to be alive. Every jingle covers a scream; every restaurant that reopens under a cheerier name is built over the same buried crime. In the games it is your job to survive until morning. On the page it is your job to understand why you can't. The catalog runs in distinct lines. It opens with the novel trilogy — The Silver Eyes, The Twisted Ones, The Fourth Closet — in which Scott Cawthon and Kira Breed-Wrisley follow a girl named Charlie back to the shuttered restaurant where her childhood ended. From there the dread fragments into anthologies: Fazbear Frights, a dozen volumes of standalone novellas (Into the Pit chief among them) ghost-crafted with Andrea Waggener, Elley Cooper, Kelly Parra and others, and the later Tales from the Pizzaplex, set in the neon-drowned mega-arcade the brand grew into. A shelf of Interactive Novels lets you pick the corridor and, usually, the wrong door. What sets it apart is the shape of the fear: bright, plastic, marketed to children, and rotten all the way down. Each novella is a self-contained nightmare — a haunted toy, a greedy wish, a machine that loves you too much — that also drops one piece of a larger puzzle readers have spent years fitting into a single hidden history of murder and machinery. Come for the springlock scares; stay to decode the timeline. Start with The Silver Eyes, the one straight-through story in the set, then let the anthologies pry the walls apart.

✦ Curated by the Loreful team

3 works not in this order

Read the Silver Eyes novel trilogy in order, then the Fazbear Frights and Tales from the Pizzaplex anthology lines in release order — each volume collects three stories, and the Pizzaplex books continue Fazbear Frights in the same format. The two film novelizations sit at the end as a separate continuity; the choose-your-path interactive novels are left off.
