Larry Niven's Gil Hamilton stories are near-future police procedurals set in his Known Space history, following a UN police detective investigating organlegging - the black-market harvesting of organs for transplant - in an overcrowded world where organ banks make body parts a form of currency. Hamilton's own case is complicated by a phantom limb: a psychic "third arm" that gives the series its name (the ARM stories, later collected as The Long ARM of Gil Hamilton). Niven revisited the character decades later with Steven Barnes for further Known Space material.
