Grydscaen

Natsuya Uesugi · 5 series · 20 novels · 1 novella · 29 short stories · 2 collections · 2010–2022

The city runs on tiers, and the tier you are born into is the ceiling you die under. Grydscaen is a near-future cyberpunk dystopia of glass towers and gutter districts, of surveillance woven into every wall and a government that reads dissent as a system fault to be patched. Into that machine walk hackers, street kids, and operatives whose minds carry more than data — and the state fears nothing so much as a thought it cannot log. Natsuya Uesugi builds the world across a single connected body of work: the core Grydscaen novels, a run of short fiction that fills the alleys between them, The Prophet Trilogy, the mind-diving arc Psycho Dive, and a manga line that renders the same streets in ink. The thread running through all of it is a young, coded-out underclass pushing against power — with queer and neurodivergent characters at the center rather than the margins. The register is neon-noir and politically charged: less chrome-and-guns spectacle than a story about who gets erased. Newcomers start with the foundational Grydscaen novels in publication order before the Prophet and Psycho Dive arcs branch off.

Grydscaen's own reading order isn't publication order: the corpus already threads Utopia and Beginnings ahead of the actually-first-published Retribution, which reads as an established internal chronology and is kept as-is here. Two anthology volumes (Tribute, Dissonance) sit inline in that numbering but collect unconnected short stories rather than continuing the plot, so they're left out. The Prophet Trilogy (2022) follows as a later sequence in the same world; its middle volume is not listed here.
