Alagaësia
Christopher Paolini · 2 series · 5 novels · 1 novella · 1 novelette · 3 short stories · 1 collection · 2002–2023
A poor farm boy finds a polished blue stone in the mountains, and it hatches. So begins the reforging of the Dragon Riders in a land where a single tyrant, Galbatorix, has outlived every rival and made the old magic his own. This is Alagaësia: a country of pine-dark valleys, elven forests, dwarf-halls under the Beor Mountains, and words in the Ancient Language that cannot lie and must not be spoken lightly. The heart of it is Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle — Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, and Inheritance — following the rider Eragon and his dragon Saphira from cattle-farm to open war. Around that quartet gather shorter works: the collection Tales from Alagaësia, opening with The Fork, the Witch, and the Worm, and the later standalone Murtagh, which turns to a darker rider and his crimson dragon. One imagination, one continuous history, told across a handful of substantial volumes. Expect a coming-of-age quest in the grand tradition — mentors and prophecy, sword-craft and spell-craft, loyalty tested by blood. Begin with Eragon and read the four in order; the Tales and Murtagh reward you afterward, once the land and its griefs are already yours.
