Lensman
Edward E. Smith, David A. Kyle & William B. Ellern · 4 series · 11 novels · 1 novella · 4 novelettes · 3 short stories · 1934–1983
Before the genre had a name, there was the Lens: a jewel of living force forged by the sages of Arisia, keyed to a single mind and worn only by the incorruptible few chosen to guard a galaxy. This is the arena of Civilization's long war against the drug-and-piracy empire of Boskone — E.E. "Doc" Smith's cosmos, where the stakes are never smaller than the fate of galaxies and the struggle unfolds across a billion years of patient design by elder races who breed heroes the way a gardener breeds roses. The spine is a single sweep of six novels. Triplanetary and First Lensman lay the ancient foundations; Galactic Patrol raises Kimball Kinnison from raw cadet to the sharpest weapon Civilization owns; Gray Lensman, Second Stage Lensmen, and Children of the Lens escalate the campaign toward its mind-bending final reckoning. Around this core orbits The Vortex Blaster (Masters of the Vortex), a quieter tale of one man dousing the loose atomic fires that scar the settled worlds, plus a set of authorized continuations — David A. Kyle's trilogy following the nonhuman Lensmen, and William B. Ellern's New Lensman — written by later hands within Smith's frame. What you get is space opera in its purest, most unembarrassed form: super-dreadnoughts, planet-hurling artillery, telepathy wielded like a blade, escalation without ceiling. The prose is pulp-plain and the pace relentless. Begin with Triplanetary and take the six in sequence — Smith numbered them so himself — or, if you would rather start where the saga first caught fire, open Galactic Patrol and circle back to the origins afterward.
