Magical Washington
Mindy Klasky · 5 series · 12 novels · 2 novellas · 1 short story · 2006–2019
Everyone knows Washington runs on power. Only a few know how much of it never makes the ballot. Below the marble and the motorcades, the capital keeps a second establishment — witches with inherited libraries, vampires with day jobs, and the warders sworn to keep them all from blowing their cover at the worst possible moment. Into this walks Jane Madison, a chronically underpaid research librarian who opens a locked basement collection, discovers she is a witch, and inherits a snarky familiar and a maddeningly handsome magical bodyguard along with the spellbooks. That is where Mindy Klasky's Magical Washington begins, and it fans outward from there. The Washington Witches books (Jane's own arc) are the spine; around them spin companion series following the city's vampires, a vampire-staffed hospital ward, and the warder brotherhood who serve as its supernatural muscle. The magic is bureaucratic, credentialed, and hilariously prone to paperwork — a coven can feel a lot like an office, with all the same politics. The register is romcom rather than grimoire: warm, wry, brisk, more concerned with a botched spell ruining a first date than with an apocalypse. Themes run to competence, belonging, and the terror of wanting things out loud. Start with Girl's Guide to Witchcraft, the first Jane Madison book — it teaches you the rules of this world while it charms you, and every other thread reads better once you have met Jane, her familiar, and the man guarding her doorstep.
