Timothy Zahn's original Thrawn trilogy - Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and The Last Command - follows the calculating Grand Admiral Thrawn's campaign to rebuild the shattered Empire several years after Return of the Jedi, introducing characters such as Mara Jade and Talon Karrde. Published in 1991-1993, the books relaunched Star Wars in print and became a foundation of what was later called the Expanded Universe, now reclassified as Legends. Zahn later returned to the character in a separate, current-canon Thrawn trilogy (2017-2019) that continues a different continuity from this one.
