Money is the lubricant of history, and history, given time enough, always seizes. Poul Anderson's Technic Civilization is a roughly five-thousand-year future chronicle that watches humanity climb out of a war-scarred Earth, grow rich beyond reckoning among the stars, and then — because all empires do — slide toward the Long Night. Baen has gathered the whole span into seven chronological omnibuses, from The Van Rijn Method through Flandry's Legacy; a few later tribute anthologies aside, this is one author's vision, start to finish. What sets it apart is its clear-eyed melancholy. Anderson prizes competence and commerce and knows, all the same, that civilizations are mortal — he lets you feel the twilight without wallowing in it, and lets the adventures stay genuinely fun along the way. Newcomers can open at the League's dawn with The Man Who Counts and Trader to the Stars, or step straight into the Empire's shadows with Ensign Flandry. The seven-volume Technic Civilization Saga is the surest road through the whole arc.
