George R.R. Martin and Lisa Tuttle's Windhaven is set on a storm-wracked ocean world settled by shipwrecked colonists, whose descendants have adapted lightweight metal wings salvaged from their crashed ship into gliders used by a hereditary caste of flyers who carry messages and news between isolated island communities. The novel follows a commoner who fights to win a set of wings for herself against a tradition that says they should only pass down through flyer bloodlines. It was assembled as a fix-up from three novellas the authors wrote together across the 1970s.
