Everything in Jade Godfrey's world starts with chocolate. She bakes cupcakes laced with just enough magic to sweeten a stranger's bad day, runs a Vancouver bakery called Cake in a Cup, and tells herself she's only a half-witch with a good palate and a better till — right up until something with teeth walks in off the rain-slicked street and her tidy little life cracks wide open. The Adept universe is contemporary urban fantasy at street level: a latte-warm West Coast city where witches, shapeshifters, vampires, sorcerers, and far older things share the sidewalk, and the people who can taste the difference call themselves Adepts. It is the work of a single author, Meghan Ciana Doidge, told across several braided series rather than one straight line. The Dowser books anchor everything — Jade's story and the found family that gathers around her. Turning around them are the Oracle novels (Rochelle, who sketches a future she can't stop coming true), plus the Reconstructionist, Amplifier, and Archivist sequences, each trailing a different gifted outsider through the same shared world, timelines overlapping and characters crossing paths. Expect warmth over grimness: quick banter, slow-burn romance, food you can almost smell, and a heroine who solves as much with loyalty as with power — with genuine danger humming underneath. Begin with Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic; the author herself recommends slipping the Oracle opener, I See Me, in just before the fourth Dowser book, so the whole picture clicks into place.
