Some books should stay shut. When a New York homicide detective named Sal Brooks watches a cursed volume swallow her brother whole, she is drafted into Team Three: the field unit that kicks in doors, contains what's leaking through the written word, and files the paperwork afterward. This is urban fantasy run like a television writers' room — magic as a case of the week, faith and firepower in the same duffel bag. Created by Max Gladstone and scripted by a rotating room — Margaret Dunlap, Mur Lafferty, Brian Francis Slattery, Andrea Phillips among them — the serial ran four seasons of weekly episodes, later gathered into four omnibus volumes. Around Sal stand Father Menchú, the team's weary shepherd; Liam, a hacker who has felt a demon wearing his skin; Grace, a warrior whose life burns down like a lit candle; and Asanti, the archivist who thinks the Society burns the very things it should be reading. That last argument is the engine of the whole thing. Every haunted book is also a door to knowledge somebody died to write down — do you destroy it, or study it? The pleasure here is the balance: monster-of-the-week momentum stacked over slow-burning season arcs, banter that never crowds out the dread, a found family that argues doctrine while the walls bleed.
