Continuity

Lavie Tidhar · 7 series · 3 novels · 1 novella · 5 novelettes · 43 short stories · 2003–2026

Come up through the dust and the spice-smell to where Central Station rises a thousand levels between old Tel Aviv and older Jaffa, and listen: the Conversation never stops. It murmurs through the node-implants of children born to speak with machines, through the rusting war-veteran robotniks who beg spare parts at the concourse, through digital Others who were once human and old gods who refuse to die. This is the shared future Earth of Lavie Tidhar — a planet the diaspora has already left and drifted back to, where flesh, code, and faith long ago stopped keeping to their own kind. Its heart is Central Station (2016), a novel assembled mosaic-fashion from linked stories: an ensemble of families — Chinese, Jewish, Filipino — orbiting the great spaceport across a handful of quiet, interlocking lives. Neom (2022) carries the same continuity south to a jewel-city on the Red Sea and a robot walking in out of the desert. Around these two pillars drift shorter cycles — of Mars, of the sunlit Solar System, of the Exodus ships that bore humanity outward — that Tidhar threads into one loose, decades-spanning history rather than a marching series. Expect science fiction written as memory and myth more than spectacle: tender, elegiac, dense with orange groves and street food and second-hand melancholy, owing as much to Cordwainer Smith as to any space opera. The reward is atmosphere and ache, not plot machinery. Begin with Central Station; everything else is a door off the same concourse.

Central Station folds many of Lavie Tidhar's 2011–2014 short stories set on the station into one fix-up novel; Neom is a second novel in the same setting, not a direct sequel. The rest of 'Continuity' is a loose mosaic of standalone stories across unconnected corners of Tidhar's future history — Cloud Permutations, a standalone novella, and Martian Sands, a standalone novel, are two entries from that wider mosaic, included as optional further reading.
