Deverry Cycle

In the kingdom of Deverry, no soul dies only once. A man wrongs the woman he loves, and the harm outlives them both, carried down the turning of the Wheel from one life to the next until it can at last be set right. Katharine Kerr builds her world on a Celtic bone-frame: warbands and dun-lords, blood-feuds and exile, the horse-and-sword clatter of a realm that half-remembers its own gods. Through it moves the dweomer, a quiet magic of will and elemental spirits, worked at the edges of things by those who have paid its steep private price. The tale runs in five movements across some fifteen volumes, all of them Kerr's own hand. It opens with the Deverry quartet (Daggerspell, Darkspell, The Bristling Wood, The Dragon Revenant), where the deathless sorcerer Nevyn, whose chosen name means "no one," shadows the reborn souls he once failed and cannot stop loving. The Westlands cycle carries the story out among the elven Westfolk; The Dragon Mage and The Silver Wyrm circle the same ancient feud through fresh centuries; and the ongoing Justice War opens a later, lawless age. What sets it apart is the weave. Each book is braided from two threads, a present quest and the past lives that shaped it, so a tavern grudge or a lover's cruelty four hundred years buried comes due in the here and now. Read in publication order, always: the flashbacks are set to detonate in sequence, and the true marvel is watching a stranger's face slowly resolve into someone you have already met and grieved.
